Southwest High School

The Legacy of Southwest High School: A Fort Worth Staple

Since its founding in 1968, Southwest High School has been an essential part of the Fort Worth community. Originally built on what was then the rural outskirts of the city, the school has seen Fort Worth grow and change over the decades, transforming from a small school with only a McDonald’s nearby to one of the 13 Fort Worth ISD high schools that serve a bustling city.

Early Beginnings and Rapid Growth

When Southwest High School first opened its doors, it was known as the “Rebels,” a name and mascot that reflected a controversial nod to the Confederate South. By 1990, however, the school embraced a significant change, moving away from its Confederate-themed mascot due to growing racial tensions. The students and faculty made the bold decision to adopt the Raiders, a shift that was part of a broader movement to eliminate Confederate symbols from public schools.

Academic and Extracurricular Excellence

Southwest High School has consistently been a leader in academic and extracurricular activities. The school’s football and baseball teams have had notable achievements over the years. The baseball team made it to the playoffs for 20 consecutive years, with their streak ending in 2020. The boys’ track team also won their first regional championship in 2013.

The Raider Band has made history, advancing to the state finals in UIL competitions multiple times. In 2007, the Southwest Wind Ensemble placed third in the TMEA State Honor Band competition, and in 2009 they repeated as finalists, earning fifth place. Southwest remains the first and only FWISD school to accomplish these feats in the 4A division.

Notable Alumni

Southwest High School has produced many successful individuals across various fields. Some notable alumni include:

  • Willie Calhoun, Major League Baseball player.
  • Bob Tallman, professional rodeo announcer and member of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.
  • Camila Carraro Mendes, actress known for her role in Riverdale.

Southwest Today

Today, Southwest High School remains a hub for education and culture in Fort Worth. It continues to serve a diverse student body, offering both college-level courses and career training through programs like Early College High School and engineering academies. The school has adapted with the times, undergoing renovations to modernize its facilities and support 21st-century learning.
